I was enjoying my vacation on a pontoon boat in the middle of Deep Creek Lake one summer afternoon in 2019 when my phone rang. It was the office. Another job had gone sideways and they had called me to help figure out a solution. The customer was furious, and rather than calling the owner, the office had called me to fix the issue. I answered the phone, handled the issue, set my phone down and just sat there silently for a minute. 

This wasn’t the first time I’d received a call like this. It was actually a pretty regular occurrence. I often got calls from the office to help them figure out a situation for a customer. 

I’d been that guy for a long time. Whether it was handling a dispatch issue, calming down an unhappy customer, or fixing a bad job another plumber had done, I had become the guy everyone called for help. 

While I owned the responsibility of being that person, I realized that if I’m going to take on that level of responsibility, it should be because it’s my company and my team, not someone else’s.

That day, on the pontoon boat, in the middle of Deep Creek Lake, I looked at my wife and said “I’m starting my own company.” 

Eight months later, I opened Ahoy Plumbing with the goal of building something better. Better for the customer, better for employees, and better for the plumbing profession I’ve spent over 20 years learning inside and out.
